You can't be referring to the colouring part.
I mean...how is it you can take colours that AREN'T associated with the actual colours of the subject and yet not make it look too contrasted? 
To even say that out loud sounds impossible to do.
"Hey G! I need you to paint a picture of someone...but for the skin can you use yellow and orange?"
"...................go fuck yourself."
So it appears to me your knowledge of colour and the wheel upon which it sits is quite mighty.
